What I Can Offer You
I have been editing textbooks, academic
books, and medical books since 1981, and have offered freelance services
since 1985. I can provide the full range of editorial services - including
developmental editing, copy editing, proofreading, and indexing
- for your publications or websites. I can take a manuscript
from concept to development, manage the reviewing process, write or rewrite
content as necessary, and provide quick turnaround copy editing and proofreading
to authors and publishers.
To me, editing - at any level - means working closely with authors
and publishers to create the best possible product for the intended
reader. Every document is different, however, and needs a different
approach and level of editorial involvement. Depending on your needs,
I will provide the level of editing appropriate to your project.
What Is Developmental Editing?
Developmental editing is the process
of evaluating a manuscript or document and offering recommendations
for its improvement. I review material to make sure that the content,
organization, pedagogy, style, level, and tone are appropriate for the
audience in the publication's intended market and that the material
is accurate, consistent, and clearly written. I have also managed or
assisted in the reviewing process, by studying the best practices of
the competition, analyzing and summarizing reviewers' comments, and
working with authors to incorporate the results into their work.
Particular tasks might include rewriting or writing to clarify or
connect material, reordering sections to improve flow, deleting redundant
or inconsistent material, identifying omissions, fact-checking material,
suggesting new features, making layout/format suggestions, and applying
general copy editing skills.
What
Is Copyediting?
Copyediting is generally done when
the content of a document has been finalized. It is the process of editing
a manuscript or document to eliminate errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation,
and facts, and ensure that usage, style, and design are consistent with
the style guide and design specifications provided by the author or
publisher. The process also includes verifying that all figures, tables,
charts, and supporting material are presented and labeled consistently
and sequentially. Reorganization and reworking of material is provided
if it is warranted. The level of copyediting depends on the author's or publisher's needs.
What
Is Proofreading?
Proofreading is the process of examining
the proofs from the printer to ensure that all errors have been corrected
and that no new typographic or formatting errors have been introduced.
Tasks include checking for errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation,
agreement, and capitalization, and catching inconsistencies of style,
usage, and design.
